How to Prepare for an International Internship Interview

You got a response. Now comes the interview. Here is how to prepare when the internship is on the other side of the world.

Before the interview

Research the company. Not just their website — check their Instagram, LinkedIn, recent news. Know what they actually do in Bali, not just their corporate tagline.

Prepare your "why Bali" answer. Every employer will ask. Have a genuine, specific reason. "I want to work in an international environment with a strong expat community" beats "I love traveling."

During the interview

Most Bali internship interviews happen on video call. Technical setup matters: good lighting, stable connection, quiet background. Test beforehand.

Be concrete about your skills. Instead of "I know social media," say "I managed an Instagram account with 5K followers, posting 4 times per week, and grew engagement by 30% in 3 months."

Ask questions. Good ones: "What does a typical day look like?", "What tools does the team use?", "What would success look like in this role after 2 months?"

Common mistakes

Do not ask about salary first — internships in Bali are legally unpaid (Indonesian law). Some employers offer bonuses or perks, but asking upfront signals you have not done your research.

Do not oversell. Bali startups value honesty over perfection. If you do not know a tool, say so and explain how quickly you learn.

After the interview

Send a short thank-you message within 24 hours. Keep it brief: thank them, mention one specific thing you discussed, confirm your availability.
