Babakan: The Quiet Alternative Near Canggu
Babakan is Canggu's best-kept secret. Ten minutes by scooter from the main strip, dramatically different rent, rice field views, and a village pace. For interns on a budget or seeking calm, it is often the smartest choice.
The vibe
Imagine Canggu without the traffic, without the inflated prices, without the lines at cafes. You still have access to everything Canggu offers (it is a 10-minute ride), but you sleep surrounded by rice fields and morning rooster calls.
Babakan is residential and authentic. Local families still live here. Warungs serve locals at local prices. The hustle of mainstream Bali feels pleasantly distant.
Why interns choose Babakan
Price. Shared villa rooms €280-400/month. Private studios €400-600. 30% cheaper than identical quality in Canggu.
Space. Houses tend to be larger. Gardens are bigger. You get more square meters for your money.
Rice field views. Morning workouts with green rice paddies in front of you. Golden hour photography that stops you in your tracks.
Scooter culture. Empty back roads. You actually enjoy riding rather than survive it.
Daily life
Cafes. A handful of good ones (Bambu Indah, Babakan Cafe) for local work sessions. Most interns scooter to Canggu for coworking and cafe variety.
Coworking. No dedicated spaces in Babakan itself. Dojo Canggu or Tropical Nomad are 10-15 minutes away.
Food. Warungs are the main offer. Excellent local food at €2-3 per meal. Western-style cafes require a trip to Canggu.
Shops. Basic groceries at local warungs. Bigger stores (Pepito, Coco) 10 minutes away.
Who Babakan works for
Budget-conscious interns. Second-time interns who already know Canggu and want calmer living. Longer-stay interns (4+ months) who need a home, not just a crash pad. Anyone who values quiet mornings and open space.
The trade-offs
Pros. Authentic, affordable, beautiful, spacious, peaceful.
Cons. No nightlife in Babakan itself (fine for some, limiting for others), scooter dependency is absolute, smaller intern density (harder to meet people directly in the neighborhood).
Our recommendation
If you are on a tighter budget but still want Canggu access, Babakan is the answer. The combination of rent savings, space, and rice field views is hard to beat. Many of our interns start in Canggu for easier community access, then move to Babakan for their second month once they have friends and know their way around.
Our network has 5 pre-negotiated guesthouses in Babakan. Budget-friendly options starting at €350/month including Wi-Fi and cleaning.
