Which Insurance to Choose for an Internship in Bali?
Health insurance for Bali is not optional — it is the difference between "I had a great time" and "I lost €2,000 over a stomach bug." Here is what to actually look for.
The minimum requirements
Medical coverage of €100,000 or more. Indonesian hospitals charge real money for real treatment. A hospitalized week with tests and medication can reach €3,000-5,000.
Repatriation coverage. If something serious happens, medical evacuation to Singapore or France can cost €30,000-80,000. Without coverage, you pay out of pocket.
Liability coverage. Scooter accidents that injure other people can generate legal claims. €500,000 minimum is the standard.
Duration aligned with your stay. Some policies only cover up to 90 days. For a 4-6 month internship, verify you are covered for the full duration.
Our recommended providers
Chapka Cap Stage — Specifically designed for internships abroad. €30-45/month depending on age. Covers medical, repatriation, liability, and electronics (laptop, phone). Popular with French students.
Chubb Travel Insurance — International provider with solid reputation. €35-60/month. Quick claim processing.
April International — Comprehensive coverage including mental health support. €40-55/month. Good for longer stays.
What to double-check in your policy
Scooter accidents — most policies exclude scooter injuries unless you hold an international driving permit. Get the permit. It costs €30 at your local prefecture and takes 15 minutes.
Pre-existing conditions — declare them. Undeclared conditions void claims.
Adventure activities — surfing, hiking Mt. Batur, diving. Most policies include these at standard rates. Confirm before booking.
Telemedicine — modern policies include video consultations with French-speaking doctors 24/7. Extremely useful for minor concerns.
What actually happens when you need it
You get sick or injured. You call the insurance hotline or use their app. They direct you to a partner hospital (BIMC in Nusa Dua, Siloam in Denpasar). You show your insurance card. You receive treatment. They bill the insurance directly. Zero out-of-pocket for you.
For anything your insurance does not cover upfront, you pay, keep receipts, and submit a claim. Most reimbursements arrive within 2-3 weeks.
The cost of going without
Roughly €30/month saved if you skip. The average unexpected medical expense for uninsured interns: €800-1,500. The math speaks for itself.
Our advice: buy before you book your flight. Activate the day you depart. Keep the PDF policy on your phone. You probably will not need it. But if you do, you will be grateful.
