Ubud: The Cultural and Spiritual Heart of Bali

·

If Canggu is Bali's energetic face, Ubud is its soul. Rice terraces, yoga studios, art galleries, and a slower pace that some interns love and others find too quiet. Here is what to know.

The vibe

Ubud sits inland, 90 minutes from the beach and 60 minutes from the airport. Surrounded by rice paddies and jungle, it attracts a different crowd than Canggu — more long-term residents, wellness practitioners, artists, writers. The pace is deliberately slow.

Who chooses Ubud

Interns working in wellness, sustainability, cultural tourism, or any role that benefits from focus over stimulation. Writers, designers, and people who need deep work time. Those who want cultural immersion over beach lifestyle.

Practical daily life

Coworking. Outpost Ubud and Hubud are mature spaces with strong communities. Slightly smaller and quieter than Canggu options.

Food. Mixed scene — local warungs, vegan cafes (Alchemy, Kafe), and mid-range restaurants. Less trendy than Canggu, equally good quality.

Getting around. Scooter essential. Ubud's main streets are narrow and crowded during tourist peaks. Outside the center, riding is scenic and easy.

Yoga. The Yoga Barn and Radiantly Alive are world-class. Classes €10-12. If yoga is part of your daily routine, Ubud is unbeatable.

Housing in Ubud

Private studios: €400-700/month. Shared villas in surrounding villages (Penestanan, Mas, Nyuh Kuning): €300-500 per person. Often with rice field views.

Our network has 6 pre-negotiated options in Ubud ranging from backpacker-friendly to premium.

The trade-offs

Pros. Focus, nature, culture, affordability, community of creative professionals.

Cons. Far from the beach (90 minutes), less intern density (so smaller peer group), can feel isolating if you thrive on energy.

Ubud as a "second half" option

Many interns split their stay — 2-3 months in Canggu to network and socialize, then relocate to Ubud for focused deep work on their remaining months. This blend gives you both the community energy and the creative space.

Is Ubud right for you?

Answer honestly: do you do better with stimulation or with calm? Canggu provides the first in abundance. Ubud provides the second with depth. There is no wrong choice — only the one that matches your working style.

Our team has placed interns in both. We help you decide based on your actual rhythm, not just the Instagram version.
